do you know that feeling...

where, as a writer...it haunts you in the middle of the night what you want to write about but then, upon waking...

nothing.
nada.
ZILCH.

i really hate this feeling, and it should promote me to get up in the middle of the night and start writing.

since summer began, i have gone back to exploring, celebrating, and back to the daily grind of trying to get my career as a school counselor rolling again. i wish it was easier to get everything done that i want to (especially in the crafts department!) but it's not.

things on my mind and now out there in the blog-u-verse:

  • job job job. gimme gimme. want one to escape the boredom!
  • love summer.
  • social media is exhausting.
  • so many books to read, so little time
  • WANNA GO EVERYWHERE!
  • ah, me.
lol

so i'm back in the state where my mind buzzes around and around with thoughts and ideas like a ticker tape. sometimes, i swear it's a psychic thing i've got going on. i have no idea where said thoughts and ideas come from.

i've heard somewhere recently that writers have a more difficult time than non-writers getting their words out there in the way they want. this comforts me, because  i never feel adequate enough in describing much of anything when writing. and most of the time, there is no word flow, or just basic flow.

more things on my bucket list:
  • certification in nutrition, health and wellness.
  • yoga certification
  • my next big project
i hope all of you out there in bloggie land are doing wonderfully, and that your summer (or whatever season) is treating you well!!

lots of love and light from me to you,

Inspiration Thursday!

(Pic Above: December '13-- me, my great niece, my 'nephew', my bestie)

When I was about 8 years old, my Grandfather had passed away and it was the most traumatizing thing in my world, it shook it to the core.

The following summer, a new family moved in across the street to my house. My Mom came back and took me with her to introduce me to said family because they had a little girl my age.

We spoke for barely a minute when I suddenly proclaimed to the new neighbor girl that we were best friends.

And the rest is history.

I can't explain what we've been through together. First crush, sleepovers galore, first kiss, boyfriends, fights, food, blogging, husbands, cancer, pregnancy, EVERYTHING....basically, it's taught us that nothing can be thrown at us without us pulling through, individually and together.

She was my first friend who made me laugh til I nearly peed, probably sometimes did pee, and who has walked this path of life with me for the longest. Definitely serious past life stuff going on here, and I have this connection with so few people <3

So she has started a blog, and being an inspiration, I wanted to share her with you!

A link to her Blog, Healthy Obsessionista--- right here.... What prompted you on the quest for all things health and wellness? A: I always hated taking medicine. And when I began working for a chiropractor first when I was 19, I knew that alternative approaches were more my speed. It seemed to snowball from there. Chiropractic, naturopaths, acupuncture, reiki - and hand in hand with those practices are nutrition, supplementation. The holistic approach encompasses all. I liked that. I was inspired to always go beyond symptoms. Instead of taking an Advil or something for a headache- I wondered to myself at 19, why do I have the headache to start with. Your other passions include... A: Where to begin? Art almost fort and foremost has been ingrained in my very being. I enjoy any creative endeavor- painting, cooking, singing or writing. Often I'm more private with my art- I share some of my work, and enjoy when people respond positively of course- but there is a part of me that likes to create and keep it for myself. Yoga and mindfulness are things I am passionate about as well. And food! Oh wow- food is something I am always excited to talk about. What inspires you? A: first and foremost nature. We are just a cog in the machine that is nature. I find when I'm in sync with mother natures flow I'm much happier and things seem to just work and you can really see- as opposed to getting bogged down by drama and nonsense. Has your research and knowledge changed your life? There's a quote by Maya Angelou that answers that perfectly; "when you know better, you do better"... Of course instill eat things here and there that I okie aren't necessarily the best choices, but I'm mindful of their impact, and don't make it an everyday thing. What would you say to someone who challenges the health and wellness lifestyle? A: I have been challenged many times and ultimately we are all on our own paths. Who am I to force anyone to see things my way? I lead an live by example. And one of my favorite sayings is there are threw things that can not long be hidden: the sun, the moon and the truth. How would you encourage a new-comer to a healthier, happier lifestyle? A: Anyone who is a kindred spirit gets my respect. It takes courage to deviate from the norm- to leave your comfort zone. I'd let them know that the healthy choices they are making today will help them feel vibrant and better tomorrow. Where can we find some of your work? A: Actually you can see my hard work as a former sale rep on the shelves of every whole foods in The north East. I have successfully placed over 40 brands in all the stores. Are there any resources to begin a newbie on their own quest? A: with so much information and misinformation on the internet- you have to confer with like minded individuals. Seek out a guru if that's your thing. Herbalists and chiropractors will chat with you. Often employees at a natural food store will have some great tips and information.

Again, Please check her out! She's flippin' awesome <3

wheat grass and acai!

if any of you know me,
i alternate juices daily
(and if you KNOW ME, i force you to drink a lot of different juices, teas, concoctions and potions...)

but wheat grass is awesome, and i know i've posted about it before.
it has so many health benefits, it's crazy.
(and it makes you feel great, too!)

  • Wheatgrass juice contains up to 70% chlorophyll, which is an important blood builder
  • Chlorophyll contains enzymes and super- oxide dismutase, a copper-containing protein found in mature red blood cells.
  • Wheatgrass juice contains crude chlorophyll (as opposed to pure) and can be taken orally and as a colon implant without side effects. In addition, scientists have never found wheatgrass to be toxic in any amount when given to either animals or humans.
  • Chlorophyll is antibacterial and can be used inside and outside the body as a natural healer. The United States Army exposed guinea pigs to lethal doses of radiation. The guinea pigs fed chlorophyll-rich vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli had half the mortality rate as those fed a non-chlorophyll diet.
  •  Chlorophyll can be extracted from many plants, but wheatgrass is superior because it has been found to have over 100 elements needed by man. If grown in organic soil, it absorbs 92 of the known 115 minerals from the soil.
  • Liquid chlorophyll has the ability to get into the tissue, where it can actually refine and renew them.
  • Liquid chlorophyll washes drug deposits from the body.
  • Chlorophyll neutralizes toxins in the body.
  • Chlorophyll helps purify the liver.
  • Wheatgrass juice can dissolve the scars that are formed in the lungs from breathing acid gasses. The effect of carbon monoxide is minimized since chlorophyll increases hemoglobin production.
  • Wheatgrass is high in oxygen like all green plants that contain chlorophyll. This is beneficial because the brain and all body tissues function at an optimal level in a highly- oxygenated environment.
  • Wheatgrass juice is a superior detoxification agent compared to carrot juice and other fruits and vegetables.
  • Wheatgrass contains a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, including the thirteen essential ones, combined with dozens of trace elements and enzymes.
  • Wheatgrass juice is an effective healer because it contains all minerals known to man, and vitamins A, B-complex, C, E, l and K. It is extremely rich in protein, and contains 17 amino acids, the building blocks of protein.
  • Massage 6 ounces into the scalp and cover with shower cap for 15 minutes to help eliminate dandruff.
  • Wheatgrass juice is great for blood disorders of all kinds.
(note** this made me want wheatgrass, so i just juiced some with 2 green apples and one huge lemon!)

(this wheatgrass info was found here: http://thechalkboardmag.com/50-reasons-to-drink-wheatgrass-everyday )

Acai Benefits:

  • rich in plant sterols that provide cardio-protective benefits to our cells. It does this by preventing blood clots, improving overall blood circulation, and relaxing the blood vessels.
  • extremely high in anthocyanins, a form of plant antioxidant associated with the ability to lower cholesterol levels in the blood stream
  • berries have powerful detoxification capacities in the human body and are a well-known traditional source of dietary fiber
  • may prevent the typical irritation associated with respiratory distress.
  • One study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry found that polyphenolic compounds extracted from acai reduced cancer cell proliferation by 56-86%. It is thought that acai’s phytochemcials can stop the process of carcinogenesis on a molecular level, killing off tumorous cells before they multiply. Acai berries are not a cure for cancer; but hopefully more research will examine their benefits and potential role in the fight.

distilled water truths

The Truth About Distilled Water:
The below excerpt is from http://rootsofhealthyliving.com/drinking-distilled-water-the-clear-truth/

"Water is the spring of life. We can survive without food for a relatively long time but only a short time without water. It is essential to every part of our health and well being.
Sometimes I wonder what our grandparents would think if they could look around and see us spend our hard earned money on water in a bottle. Why do we do that? Do we think it’s not healthy to drink tap water? Is it just the convenience? Is it because we intrinsically know that water should be clean and free of chemicals? How do we know if there is a difference in the water we purchase? There is spring water, purified water; water with added minerals for taste, and yes even distilled water.
By reading this article you will learn what distilled water is and why so many are turning to it. You will begin to discover the health benefits of distilled water. In this article we will discuss problems with mineral accumulation in the body and the diseases related to it, and how drinking distilled water can help. We will also address how distilled water is an “empty” or “thirsty” water, what this means and why it is important to our health. Finally, we will tackle how much water is really necessary to drink each day.

There are over 700 potentially harmful minerals and chemicals found in our drinking water. Distilling our water removes ALL of them. Distilled Water is the process of heating water and capturing the steam. The steam is than collected back into a container becoming distilled water. This process leaves all other minerals and chemicals behind creating a product that truly is pure water. This steam is simply hydrogen and oxygen or in other words, water and nothing but water.

It is important to consider that our understanding of minerals is incorrect. There is mounting evidence that clearly shows our bodies CAN NOT assimilate inorganic minerals. In fact, the opposite is true. We break them down into small enough particles so our bodies can take them in, but they can’t effectively use them. What happens? Those minerals accumulate in our bodies, building up over time. Think of corrosion on pipes. We are no different. Calcium deposits line our arteries, we develop bone spurs, arthritis can develop where minerals and other toxins have settled on the joints and on and on and on. It is true that we need minerals in our diet. However, we are organic beings and need organic minerals. Minerals found in plant food have been changed from inorganic to organic and are readily assimilated and used by the body. For example, one glass of fresh squeezed orange juice has more usable minerals in it than 30 gallons of water!

Yes! Switching to distilled water will help keep those inorganic minerals from entering the body. That is a huge step toward health, but what about those minerals already there? There is another beautiful truth about distilled water. Because distilled water is nothing but water it is naturally empty or thirsty. It actually pulls into it the properties it comes in contact with. For example, it has been proven that using distilled water when making herbal tea is 30 percent more effective at drawing out the medicinal properties of the herbs than regular tap water. Thirty percent! That is a huge difference. By operating on those same principles, drinking distilled water will draw out those inorganic mineral accumulations in the body, providing relief from pain and improved health over time.

Most Americans walk around chronically dehydrated and don’t even realize it. A good rule of them is to drink your weight in ounces. For an average person, weighing about 130 pounds, a gallon of distilled water a day is not too outrageous. Distilled Water can be purchased very inexpensively at your local grocery store. Many water bottle delivery companies are beginning to offer distilled water as an option. Small counter top distillers are also available online and work really well.
To summarize, chronic dehydration is an epidemic in the United States. Not getting enough water to drink can cause a host of health problems. We can use the empty properties of distilled water to draw out the medicinal properties of herbal tea as well as draw out accumulations of inorganic minerals and other toxins that build up in our body. There are promising studies in regards to Distilled Water and Alzheimer’s, Arthritis, and Heart Disease. Many find water relieves headache pain, helps keep them regular, can help hydrate and soften skin, and helps flush out the lymph system carrying toxins out of the body and can even help with weight loss. So only one question remains…How much water have you had to drink today?"
Gets your thinking, doesn't it?

If you find you're not feeling so hydrated, try a glass of distilled water. I guarantee you will start feeling better pretty quickly!!

i love juicing beets.
there isn't only the health benefits
but the beauty benefits as well..
(lip stain! cheek stain! stain on your hands! stains on your counters! lol)

if you do juice a beet, please keep in mind that if your pee or poop turn pink afterwards for a few days, it's ok!! that means it's working as a thorough detox through your liver and the rest of your system!

benefits of beets:

  • Beets contain sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron and phosperous! They are also considered a fiber food and contain vitamins A and C as well as niacin
  •  Beets contain folic acid which is necessary for the production and maintenance of new cells
  • Studies have shown that beets guard against cancer, especially colon cancer.
  • . Medical studies have also shown that including beets in your diet helps protect a body against heart disease.
gotta love beets...

in my beet juice (i usually juice half a beet at a time...) i add carrots, green apples and ginger usually!!

Royal Raymond Rife

I just wanted to educate you all on the success (and non-quackery) of Rife.

Trust no one. Try everything.

"Disease organisms such as those of tuberculosis, cancer, sarcoma, typhoid and others may be observed to succumb when exposed to certain lethal frequencies peculiar to each individual organism, and directed upon them by rays conveying a wide ranges of waves." ~The Smithsonian Institution 1944

Royal Rife and Antoine Bechamp discovered cancer is in fact a pleomorphic fungi that cannot transform into some 16 advanced forms when the body's pH is slightly alkaline.

Ancient Medicine: Lymph Nodes

"Lymph Glands; Lymph Glands are one method the body has for eliminating toxins. If you have problems here, check you priorities. Are you retaining toxic thoughts or beliefs for no apparent reason?"

The above information is from the website http://www.compassionatedragon.com/metaphysics4.html

Many believe that the cause of sicknesses or cancers are related to the psyche, which causes the immune system to shut down with any negative thoughts about yourself or others.

There are times where we all hijack our emotions. Fear of doing something, fear of what others will think of you, fear instilled in you from others...

Well, when you have cancer, you stop giving a crap of what people think of you. It's probably because you've realized that the people you love and who love you stayed in your life through your ordeal, and no one else really matters.

We've all dealt with toxic relationships-- spouses, partners, family, friends--
the ones who have to one-up you (gotta love the competitive ones), the ones who love to put you down,

but how do you get out of them?
or just stop giving a ^%^%#%#?

lol--
i think the trick is to stay super, duper busy at all costs!

and within  your budget, of course.

so while you're stuck at home due to the blues, or the weather...
learn. blog. create.clean. do something. keep BUSY!

"The Seven Emotions

The seven basic emotions related to organ function are anger, joy, worry, pensiveness, sadness, fear, and shock (fright). Although the mind/body connection has been acknowledged only relatively recently in Western medicine, the interaction of emotions with the physical body is an essential aspect of traditional Chinese medicine.
Each organ has a corresponding emotion; imbalance of this emotion can affect the organ's function. For example, prolonged anger can lead to an imbalance in the liver. At the same time, liver imbalances can produce symptoms of anger, often leading to a self-perpetuating cycle.
In discussing the emotional aspect of the disease process, it is important to remember that it is normal to experience the full range of emotions. It is only when a particular emotion is experienced over a prolonged period or with particular intensity that it becomes a source of imbalance. It is obviously important for a person with severe emotional problems to get professional help from a trained psychotherapist. But even in these cases, the therapy is more effective when the corresponding organ imbalance is rectified. Acupuncture is especially effective in treating disorders of the emotions. Even when it is not completely effective in treating a physical ailment, it almost always brings about a state of emotional peacefulness.

Anger

Anger is associated with the liver. By its nature, anger causes qi to rise, leading to a red face and red eyes, headaches, and dizziness. This matches the pattern of liver fire rising. Anger can also cause liver qi to "attack the spleen," producing lack of appetite, indigestion, and diarrhea (often experienced by those people who argue at the dinner table or eat while driving).
In a more long-term view, suppressed anger or frustration often causes liver qi to become stagnant; this might result in depression or menstrual disorders. It is interesting to note that people who take herbs to release stagnant liver qi often experience bouts of anger as the stagnation is relieved. The anger passes as the condition clears. Similarly, anger and irritability are often the determining factor in diagnosing liver qi stagnation. Many people are relieved to know their rage has a physiologic basis. It is essential to avoid drinking coffee when treating anger-related liver disorders, as coffee heats the liver and greatly intensifies the condition.

Joy

The emotion of joy is connected with the heart. A disorder related to joy may sound perplexing, since most people want as much joy in their life as possible. The disorders from this emotion are not caused by happiness; rather, the imbalance comes from too much excitement or stimulation, or sudden good news that comes as a shock to the system.
When evaluating stress levels, psychologists look at all sources of stress, both positive and negative. Clearly the death of a spouse or a job loss is a significant source of stress. However, a marriage or job promotion, while a happy occasion, is also a source of stress. A person who is constantly on the go, partying, and living a life of excess can eventually develop heart imbalances with palpitations, anxiety, andinsomnia. A person with heart imbalances may also exhibit emotional symptoms, since the heart is the seat of the spirit (shen). A person with extreme disturbances of heart shen might be seen chattering happily to himself with outbursts of laughter.
Such behavior results from the heart organ's inability to provide a stable resting place for the spirit. This type of imbalance is treated with acupuncture along the heart meridian. Herbal treatments consist of formulas that nourish heart blood or yin. If heart fire disturbs the spirit, herbs that clear heat from the heart are used.

Worry

A very common emotion in our stress-filled society, worry can deplete the energy of the spleen. This can cause digestive disturbances and eventually lead to chronic fatigue: A weakened spleen cannot efficiently turn food into qi, and the lungs are unable to extract qi from air efficiently. A person who worries too much "carries the weight of the world on her shoulders," a good description of how a person feels when her weak spleen qi leads to dampness. Treatment would include moxa and herbs that strengthen the spleen, allowing a person the energy to deal with life's problems instead of dwelling on them.

Pensiveness

Too much thinking or obsessing about a topic can also deplete the spleen, causing a stagnation of its qi. A person with this condition may exhibit such symptoms as poor appetite, forgetting to eat, and bloating after eating. In time, the person may develop a pale complexion from a deficiency of spleen qi. This can eventually affect the heart, causing the person to dream about the same subjects at night. Students are often affected by this imbalance; the standard treatment is use of herbs that tonify heart blood and spleen qi.

Sadness

Sadness or grief affects the lungs, producing fatigue, shortness of breath, crying, or depression. Treatment for this condition involves acupuncture to points along the lung and kidney meridians. Often, herbal formulas are used that tonify the qi or yin of the lungs.

Fear

The emotion of fear is related to the kidneys. This relationship can readily be seen when extreme fear causes a person to urinate uncontrollably. In children, this can also manifest as bed-wetting, which psychologists have linked to insecurity and anxiety. Long-term anxiety due to worrying about the future can deplete the kidneys of yin, yang, and qi, eventually leading to chronic weakness. Treatment involves tonifying the kidneys with yin or yang tonics, depending on the particular symptoms.

Shock

Shock is especially debilitating to the kidneys and heart. The "fight or flight" reaction causes an excessive release of adrenaline from the adrenal glands that sit on top of the kidneys. This causes the heart to respond with palpitations, anxiety, and insomnia. Chronic stress from shock can be very debilitating to the entire system, causing a wide range of problems. Severe shock can have a long-term effect on the heart shen, as is evident in victims of post-traumatic stress syndrome. Treatment involves psychotherapy, herbs that calm the spirit and nourish the heart and kidneys, and regular acupuncture treatments."

enzymes and digestion

(forgive me, i research so much, i don't know where these excerpts are from!)

"Raw food/living food-- an uncooked vegan or vegetarian diet which consists of berries, fruits, vegetables, roots, nuts, flowers, sea vegetables, germinated seeds, sprouts and sometimes raw dairy products for maintenance, not cleansing.

Plants are rich natural sources of antioxidants and other nutrients.

Live food also contains enzymes which act as catalysts for detox and absorption of nutrients. Under naturopathy, juices of certain vegetables and fruits are used as cancer-fighting foods.

Green leaves-- have alkaline minerals, the best fiber, calming and anti-stress properties, are the best chlorophyll source.

Body attempts to adapt to cooked food by increasing the enzyme content of our saliva to begin breaking down the food as quickly as possible. Without proper enzymes to accumulate undigested materials in our system leading to inflammation, stagnation, fatigue and digestive distress.

Saliva of a raw food eater contains far fewer enzymes than that of a person who eats cooked food. This is because raw foods contain enzymes of their own, making salivary enzymes not as strongly needed for digestion. "

random things i know!

(one of the random things i know-- these 2 cute pups like to be bad together!!)

i had to get these out of my head,
but there was so many
i couldn't categorize them!
(sorry! even if i've repeated them)

  • your immune system tries to attack the 5 a's...antacids, antibiotics, alcohol, advil, animal foods
  • anything white and refined causes candida and suppresses the immune system
  • melatonin is an anti-cancer substance for the entire body
  • genes don't cause disease, but changes in the environment do.
  • remission only occurs in 7% of patients, no evidence that that success rate results from the treatments offered.
  • temporary tumor shrinkage through chemo has never shown to cure cancer or extend life.
  • have a cough-- use licorice herb (i've done this, it's so helpful, yummy, and non-"medicine"
  • prednisone, cortisone and other steroids used to treat dozens of conditions including asthma, lupus and cancer frequently cause weight gain, because they boost the appetite and force the body to retain certain fluids. they CAUSE just as many disorders as they are used for including cancer, heart disease, depression, hostility and aggression and eating disorders and...RISK OF HIV!
  • tumors could disappear when toxins are eliminated

tuesday craftiness

last year, when I was going through chemo-hell, i decided i needed an outlet for my pent up anger, frustration, and time i had to wait to get back to my life.

so instead of writing (unless to do lists count?) i threw myself into everything!

this is my first painting: hope.

i made it with the thought of the words, hope floats upwards.

so there's hope. floating in the sea, love all around and looking up at the sky.

hope you like it!

oregano oil

I've been learning how to make different essential oils/cooking oils/healing oils on my own. My hubs (a.k.a. LML, short for love of my life) should be very happy, I thought, as I told him about what I was doing, and all he tells me in response is that my Father-in-Law used to do stuff like this.

Well, at least if we'd ever have a child, that's going to be some interesting blood line.

I started off by making oregano oil. What are the properties of oregano oil? Well...
"The ingredients in oil of oregano are unique

What is sold in most traditional grocery stores as oregano is not wild Mediterranean oregano. It has little preventative or therapeutic value. Real wild Mediterranean oregano is of two varieties. Thymus capitatus is the variety that grows in Spain. Most of the oregano that grows throughout the rest of the Mediterranean is the origanum vulgare variety. In order to obtain the health benefits of oil of oregano, the oregano must be of one of these two varieties.

These are the ingredients found in oil of oregano that provide its unique properties:

Carvacrol has been proven in studies to be a powerful antimicrobial, so powerful that it can be used to preserve food and render it self-stable. Reseach has shown it to be effective against candida albicans, the aspergillus mold, staphylococcus, campylobacter, klebsiella, e.coli, giardia, pseudomonas, salmonella, and listeria. Carvacrol provides many of the health benefits of oil of oregano .

Thymol is a natural fungicide with antiseptic properties. It is the active ingredient in Listerine mouthwash. Thymol is also an immune system booster and a shield against toxins. It is capable of preventing tissue damage and encouraging healing.

Terpenes is the source of the word turpentine. Terpenes give off a pine scent and are also produced by pine trees. Terpenes have potent antibacterial properties.

Rosmarinic acid is a stronger antioxidant than vitamin E. It prevents free radical damage and is instrumental in preventing atherosclerosis and cancer. Rosmarinic acid has shown to be effective in the treatment of allergic asthma. It reduces fluid build up and swelling during an allergy attack, and is an effective natural antihistamine.

Naringin is the substance that gives grapefruit its bitter taste. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and helps boost the effect of antioxidants.

Oil of oregano also contains a good amount of the vitamin E complex, as well as calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, potassium, copper, boron, manganese, vitamins A and C, and niacin.

Recent research shows oil of oregano beneficial to the colon and liver

A study reported in the journal Experimental and Toxicologic Pathology investigated the treatment efficacy of intra-rectal and intra-peritoneal application of oregano oil on induced colitis in rats using a morphological damage score. They found a significant difference in terms of ulceration, mucus cell depletion, inflammatory cell infiltration, vascular dilatation, crypt abcesses, and edema between the group given oregano oil compared to the control group.

A study reported in the journal Mediators of Inflammation examined the anti-inflammatory effects of the combination of thyme and oregano oil administered at three concentrations on mice with induced colitis. They found that the treatment decreased the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1beta, IL-6, GM-CSF, and TNF-alpha, especially after the application of the medium dose of 0.2% thyme and 0.1% oregano oil. The medium dose also significantly lowered the amount of the IL-1beta and IL-6 proteins. Administration of the medium dose decreased the mortality rate, accelerated the body weight gain recovery, and reduced the macroscopic damage of the colonic tissue.

Phytomedicine reports a study to investigate the possible effects of carvacrol obtained from oregano oil on the regenerative feature of the liver following partial hepatectomy in rats. The liver regeneration rate of the animals was calculated measuring the weights of their livers before and after the hepatectomy. The researchers found that the liver regeneration increased significantly in the rats given the oregano oil compared to the control group.

Another study reported in Phytomedicine investigated the comparative effects of carvacrol in the liver of rats subjected to restricted blood supply and the restoration of blood flow to the organs and tissues following a period of time. They found that carvacrol ws able to protect the liver against defects caused by the event. They also found carvacrol to be non-hepatotoxic at the applied doses.

Oil of oregano is a powerful and versatile medicine

In his book, The Cure is in the Cupboard, Dr. Cass Ingram tells of how oil of oregano saved his life after he contacted a blood borne fungus from an IV needle. He claims that oil of oregano holds supremacy as nature's most powerful and versatile antiseptic. It is a preservative that can be used to halt the growth of microbes and reduce the risk for food poisoning in meats, eggs, milk and other foods. In his book he lists more than 170 conditions for which the oil may be useful, including treatment for athletes foot, psoriasis, eczema, worms, amoebae, and protozoa. It is helpful in combating diarrhea, intestinal gas, sore throat, sinusitis, breathing difficulties, dandruff, diaper rash, bee stings and venomous bites. It can help reduce fever, relieve cramps, and reduce the effects of measles and mumps.

Herbal authority Steven Foster credits oregano as having been used successfully to treat indigestion, diarrhea, nervous tension, insect bites, toothache, earache, rheumatism, and coughs due to whopping cough and bronchitis.

Using oil of oregano

There is a large quality difference in oil of oregano products currently on the market. Most products do not contain pure oil of oregano. They are instead a combination of oregano oil with a dilutive oil such as olive or flax. Some of these products probably contain a significant amount of oil of oregano, others do not, but there is no way to know. It would also be helpful to know if the oil of oregano was naturally extracted. If you find a brand that tells you how much actual oil of oregano is in the product, the next step is to determine the amount of the active ingredients which are primarily the volatile oils carvacrol and thymol. This is not an easy task.

Supplements of oregano oil are available as tinctures and capsules. Oreganol is a popular product but the oil of oregano is listed as part of a proprietary blend, so you really don't have any idea what you are getting. It is expensive, so its price may be an indication of quality or it may not.

Bio-alternatives makes a tincture that it says it provides 85% naturally extracted carvacrol, but it is blended with olive oil, so you don't know how much oil of oregano is in it. A one ounce bottle sells for $17.99. This oregano is the origanum vulgare variety.

Byron Richards of Wellness Resources has done a fairly good job of coming clean about what is in his Oregano Oil product. According to him each capsule contains 100 mg. of wild oregano oil that is 55%-65% carvacrol. He doesn't tell you how it was extracted. A bottle of 180 capsules sells for about $28.00. This oregano is the thymus capitatus variety.

Oregano can be grown in the garden and processed in the kitchen.

Overview

Oregano oil comes from the leaves of oregano plants, Origanum vulgare, which belong to the mint family. Oregano grows wild in Mediterranean regions, where it has long been valued for its healing properties. The word oregano means "joy of the mountains," and the ancient Greeks used this herb to treat headaches, indigestion, seizures and wounds. Today, oregano oil is valued for its antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Check with your physician before using oil of oregano to treat specific health problems.

Antioxidants

According to "The Cure is in the Cupboard," a book written by Cass Ingram, M.D., oil of oregano is a powerful antioxidant, meaning it might destroy free radicals that cause cancer, strokes and heart disease. Oregano oil works as an antioxidant because of several potent compounds, including rosmarinic acid, hydroxycinnamic acid, p-hydroxyhydrocaffeic acid and labiatic acid. The American Cancer Society adds that the oregano herb contains about 30 times more antioxidant capacity than oranges and 42 times the antioxidant power of apples."
Well, of course, since the ANCIENT GREEKS used it, according to WebMD and other sites, there is not enough "information" out there to support the good that oregano oil does.
