research, research, research

i always tell everyone to do their own research and to respect their own bodies. after all, you know your own body better than any one else does. i am not a doctor, do not have a medical degree, but probably read at least one book a day. so whatever i write, or learn, is from my own vast research, and you should seriously do your own <3

like i said, i began reading the book, Tox-Sick by Suzanne Somers and have no idea why it was poopoo'd by some "medical" people. Obviously, Suzanne writes from her experiences, point of view, and states it outright. However, there are doctors, scientists, medical journal article info in her book that prove this. People who have not picked up and glanced at the inside of the book agree with panicking medical people writing the articles...I'm sure many have not read Tox-Sick either.

So for the next few weeks, I want to break down different parts of the book (which i've wrote in entirely, by the way...) for you guys, based on my experiences and opinions.

So, what I wanted to talk about:

"One of the most extensive studies of Americans' toxic burden was funded by the Environmental WOrking Group, and conducted at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Researchers tested nine adults, none of whom worked in industries that would expose them to high levels of environmental poisons; well-known journalist Bill Moyers was one of them. All were tested for the presence of 210 contaminants that have been globally recognized as persistent pollutants (like DDT). The results of the participants' blood and urine showed he presence of 167 of the 210 contaminants, with an average of 91 in any given person. Each person tested had an average of:
-53 brain chemicals that have been linked to cancer.
-63 compounds toxic to the central nervous system, including the brain.
-58 compounds toxic to the endocrine (hormonal) system.
-55 compounds that are toxic to the immune system and frequently lead to autoimmunity (fibromyalgia, lupus, multiple sclerosis) and an impaired ability to fight infections."

So imagine, the air we breathe, the water we drink (if bottled or tap), and then everything you're adding to your body in your "food", makeup, hair stuff, lotions, nail polish, when you clean your home, when you wash your clothes...

then it's not hard to wonder why we are so toxic.

i used to wonder why so many 28-35 year olds had hodgkin's lymphoma.

when i would ask my oncologist how the lymphatic system worked, he had no idea. said i got cancer because it's just a freak thing. I was not allowed to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, or go get colon hydrotherapy.

i am not making this stuff up.

so i didn't know anything about the lymphatic system and hodgkin's lymphoma or detoxing (except that alcoholics or people addicted to drugs did this), or cleanses, until I was done with AVD chemo, ICE chemo, and then the worst chemo that nearly killed me (i think it did, actually) followed up with a stem cell transplant. all these i was scared into doing because my oncologist kept telling me i had 3 months to live. who wants to give up their life? so i trusted them and believed them, but the "system" failed me.

If i had known then what I know now, or knew a year ago, I never would have gone that path and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemies.

But there are so many things we can do to cleanse the body...
-sweat
-eat better (no processed foods, sugars, alcohol)
-vitamins and supplements that will help promote detox (spirulina, chlorella, activated charcoal, etc.)
-chew some cloves daily (kills parasites along with...)
-...eating some garlic daily (sooo many benefits!)
-colon hydrotherapy (removes harmful buildup of toxins from colon and intestines.
-essiac tea (cleanses blood)
-rebounding (moves lymph)
-dry brushing (moves lymph)
-dandelion tea (cleanses)

I've done all these things...a lot, some every day. and i'm wondering...if other people knew just a little bit of my entire story, maybe it would help.

intestines and the lymphatic system

taken from the book, the human body :)
(you know, the ones for kids!)

"the intestines"

the small intestine has three main sections. The duodenum is about 12 inches long. The name actually means "!2 each". The jejunum is about 6.5 ft; the ileum is over 9.8 ft.
The linings of the last two are folded, with a velvety texture made by millions of villi, finger shaped structures less than a millimeter long. These provide a huge surface area for absorbing nutrients into the blood and lymph fluid in the intestinal wall. The large intestine consists of the cecum, appendix, colon, and the rectum to store stools.

"the lymphatic system"

lymph is a milky liquid that begins as watery fluids that have collected in spaces around cells and watery fluids that have leaked from small blood vessels. These fluids channel slowly into a body wide system of veinlike tubes, with one way valves. Lymph has several jobs: it collects wastes from cell activity; it distributes nutrients, especially fats; it also carries white blood cells around the body in the fight against infection.

lymph nodes

lymph vessels widen at intervals to form lymph nodes, which vary from the size of grape seeds to larger than whole grapes. the nodes clean and filter the lymph and store germ fighting white blood cells. in several body regions, nodes are clustered together, as shown here in the armpit. these nodes are so called "glands" that swell up and become hard during illness, because they contain millions of white blood cells and dead germs.

spleen makes white blood cells.

good to know :)

beets, the properties and the juice

i love juicing beets.
there isn't only the health benefits
but the beauty benefits as well..
(lip stain! cheek stain! stain on your hands! stains on your counters! lol)

if you do juice a beet, please keep in mind that if your pee or poop turn pink afterwards for a few days, it's ok!! that means it's working as a thorough detox through your liver and the rest of your system!

benefits of beets:

  • Beets contain sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron and phosperous! They are also considered a fiber food and contain vitamins A and C as well as niacin
  •  Beets contain folic acid which is necessary for the production and maintenance of new cells
  • Studies have shown that beets guard against cancer, especially colon cancer.
  • . Medical studies have also shown that including beets in your diet helps protect a body against heart disease.
gotta love beets...

in my beet juice (i usually juice half a beet at a time...) i add carrots, green apples and ginger usually!!

try it-- you won't be disappointed!

Love your Lymph

(yep, me in the pink, moving my lymph during our last cruise!)

The below article is from here

Want vibrant health? Many practitioners recommend cleansing, an age-old practice used in holistic medicine. When you mention cleansing to most people, they typically think of eliminating toxins from the liver and intestines, which is indeed a valuable health practice. But there is an equally important, and much-overlooked, system in the body that keeps us feeling great — the lymphatic system. Whether you’re suffering from aches and pains, swelling, inflammation, fatty deposits or bloating, cleansing the lymphatic system once or twice a year often can be the difference between great health and poor health.
The lymphatic system (or lymph system, as it is commonly called) is a complex network of fluid-filled nodes, vessels, ducts and glands — including the spleen, thymus and tonsils — that bathe our cells and carry our body’s “sewage” away from the tissues and neutralize it. These elements of the lymph system work together to carry cellular waste to the bloodstream. The lymph system handles toxins that enter the body through external sources, such as foods or air pollution, but also handles internally produced toxins (endotoxins) that are the result of normal metabolic processes in the body.
Learn About Lymph
A study by Elisabeth Dancey, M.D., author of The Cellulite Solution (St. Martin’s Press, 1997), found that women with cellulite showed lymphatic system deficiencies. Another study found that 80 percent of overweight women have sluggish lymphatic systems and that getting this system flowing smoothly is the key to easy weight loss and improved feelings of well-being.
If the lymph system is inefficient, you may see fatty deposits or cellulite or experience aches and pains. Conversely, if you improve the cleansing ability of the lymph system, it will be able to “sweep” away the toxins that are linked to pain, cellulite, fatty deposits and some autoimmune disorders.
A healthy lymphatic system also helps purify the blood through the largest mass of lymph tissue in the body, the spleen. The spleen fights infection and destroys worn-out red blood cells in the body. By cleansing your lymphatic system, your spleen will be better able to handle the retired red blood cells.
Eat Well for a Clean Lymph System
Foods can either help or hinder the flow of lymph in the body. To cleanse the lymphatic system, avoid “chemical foods” that contain artificial preservatives, flavors, colors and stabilizers — most prepared, packaged and fast foods. The further away from the natural, whole fruit, vegetable, grain or bean that a food has moved, the more likely it is to clog your lymphatic system.
Avoid foods that are difficult to digest, including fatty foods, excessive animal protein, simple sugars and simple carbohydrates. Sweet foods and the “whites,” which include white rice, white bread, white pasta and any white-flour products, require enormous amounts of energy to handle the resulting rapid blood-sugar fluctuations. This energy is better served to cleanse your lymph system.

Drink plenty of water. Without adequate water, lymph fluid cannot flow properly. If you drink inadequate amounts of water daily, your lymphatic system will slow down.
The enzymes and acids in raw fruit are powerful lymph cleansers, particularly when eaten on an empty stomach. Add more raw fruits, vegetables, salads and fresh juices to your diet and your lymph will have the tools it needs to do some serious deep cleansing.
Flavonoids, malic acid, citric acid, quinic acid and enzymes in cranberries and cranberry juice help emulsify stubborn fat in the lymphatic system. Be sure to drink only pure, unsweetened cranberry juice free of sweeteners — pasteurized bottled cranberry juice doesn’t have the same benefits. Dilute the juice at a ratio of about 4:1, water to cranberry juice. If you prefer a less tart juice, dilute 1 part unsweetened cranberry juice with 2 parts pure apple juice and 2 parts water. Make sure you use only pure apple juice devoid of sweeteners or preservatives.
Eat plenty of green vegetables to provide chlorophyll (the green color in plants) and loads of vitamins and minerals to assist in lymph cleansing.
Foods high in essential fatty acids are critical to ensure a properly functioning lymph system. Some of these foods include flaxseeds and cold-pressed flax oil; fresh, raw nuts and seeds like walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds; avocados; and cold-pressed oils, such as walnut and pumpkin seed. Be sure to purchase fresh, raw nuts and seeds from the refrigerated section of your local health-food or grocery store. The essential fatty acids found in nuts and seeds go rancid easily.

Try These Herbs for Deep Cleansing
The following six herbs are my top picks for cleansing the lymphatic system. They can be taken alone or in a combination of two or more herbs in a tea or tincture, for about three weeks at a time.
Echinacea (Echinacea spp.). Not only a powerful immune-boosting herb, echinacea combines well with astragalus to lessen congestion and swelling in the lymphatic system. Make a decoction using 2 teaspoons of dried echinacea per cup of water. Bring to a boil, and simmer for 15 minutes. Drink 1 cup, three times a day. Or take 1 teaspoon of tincture three times daily.
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus). The Chinese have been using astragalus, which they refer to as huang qi, for more than 2,000 years. “Huang qi” means “life-force strengthener.” In addition to strengthening the life force, astragalus is an excellent lymphatic system cleanser. Alongside echinacea, it alleviates congestion and swelling in the body. Astragalus is primarily available as a tincture, or in capsule or tablet form. Because potency can vary greatly with this herb, it is best to follow the package directions for the optimum dose.
Cleavers (Galium aparine). Known primarily as a blood and urinary tract cleanser, cleavers also enhances the function of the lymphatic system and decreases congestion and inflammation in the tissues. This herb improves the capacity of the lymphatic system to deal with toxins and combines well with pokeroot (see below). For cleavers tea, use 2 to 3 teaspoons of the dried herb (stems and small leaves) per cup of water. Drink 1 cup three times daily. Alternatively, use 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of tincture three times daily. Avoid using cleavers if you suffer from diabetes or have diabetic tendencies.
Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis). In addition to having anti-inflammatory properties, goldenseal encourages lymphatic cleansing. Use 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of dried herb per cup for an infusion. Drink 3 cups daily or take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of tincture three times a day.
Pokeroot (Phytolacca americana). Pokeroot is a useful herb for improving the flow of lymph. It works well with immune- and lymph-related conditions, such as adenitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis, swollen glands, mumps, mastitis and fibrocystic breast disease. Take 1/3 teaspoon of the dried root per cup of water and simmer on the stove for 15 minutes to make a decoction. Alternatively, take 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon of the tincture, three times a day. Do not increase the dose — the herb has powerful laxative effects that can be harmful in larger doses.
Caution: Pokeroot can be toxic. The herb should be used only under the supervision of an expert qualified in the appropriate use of this herb. Pokeroot should not be used by pregnant and breastfeeding women or in people who have lymphocytic leukemia or gastrointestinal irritation.

Wild indigo root (Baptisia tinctoria). Wild indigo helps destroy damaging microbes in the body and cleans up the lymphatic system, improves lymph flow and reduces swelling in lymph glands. For a powerful herbal cleanser, combine wild indigo root with cleavers and pokeroot. You can take it as a decoction using 1/3 teaspoon of the dried root per cup of water. Simmer 15 minutes and drink 1 cup three times a day. Or take 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of tincture three times daily. Do not use wild indigo if you’re pregnant or nursing.
MOVE YOUR BODY: EXERCISE IS VITAL
There is three times more lymph fluid in the body than blood, yet the body has no organ like the heart to pump lymph. That means lymph relies on deep breathing and exercise to move. While cleansing the lymphatic system, be sure to increase aerobic exercise — try brisk walking, rebounding on a mini trampoline or jogging. Also, it’s important to take time to practice deep-breathing exer- cises to help pump the lymph with fresh oxygen.
Thoroughly cleansing the lymphatic system is the key to long- term and efficient weight loss and great health. It is also the key to experiencing great health and living without pain.

Ancient Medicine: Lymph Nodes

"Lymph Glands; Lymph Glands are one method the body has for eliminating toxins. If you have problems here, check you priorities. Are you retaining toxic thoughts or beliefs for no apparent reason?"

The above information is from the website http://www.compassionatedragon.com/metaphysics4.html

Many believe that the cause of sicknesses or cancers are related to the psyche, which causes the immune system to shut down with any negative thoughts about yourself or others.

There are times where we all hijack our emotions. Fear of doing something, fear of what others will think of you, fear instilled in you from others...

Well, when you have cancer, you stop giving a crap of what people think of you. It's probably because you've realized that the people you love and who love you stayed in your life through your ordeal, and no one else really matters.

We've all dealt with toxic relationships-- spouses, partners, family, friends--
the ones who have to one-up you (gotta love the competitive ones), the ones who love to put you down,

but how do you get out of them?
or just stop giving a ^%^%#%#?

lol--
i think the trick is to stay super, duper busy at all costs!

and within  your budget, of course.

so while you're stuck at home due to the blues, or the weather...
learn. blog. create.clean. do something. keep BUSY!

"The Seven Emotions

The seven basic emotions related to organ function are anger, joy, worry, pensiveness, sadness, fear, and shock (fright). Although the mind/body connection has been acknowledged only relatively recently in Western medicine, the interaction of emotions with the physical body is an essential aspect of traditional Chinese medicine.
Each organ has a corresponding emotion; imbalance of this emotion can affect the organ's function. For example, prolonged anger can lead to an imbalance in the liver. At the same time, liver imbalances can produce symptoms of anger, often leading to a self-perpetuating cycle.
In discussing the emotional aspect of the disease process, it is important to remember that it is normal to experience the full range of emotions. It is only when a particular emotion is experienced over a prolonged period or with particular intensity that it becomes a source of imbalance. It is obviously important for a person with severe emotional problems to get professional help from a trained psychotherapist. But even in these cases, the therapy is more effective when the corresponding organ imbalance is rectified. Acupuncture is especially effective in treating disorders of the emotions. Even when it is not completely effective in treating a physical ailment, it almost always brings about a state of emotional peacefulness.

Anger

Anger is associated with the liver. By its nature, anger causes qi to rise, leading to a red face and red eyes, headaches, and dizziness. This matches the pattern of liver fire rising. Anger can also cause liver qi to "attack the spleen," producing lack of appetite, indigestion, and diarrhea (often experienced by those people who argue at the dinner table or eat while driving).
In a more long-term view, suppressed anger or frustration often causes liver qi to become stagnant; this might result in depression or menstrual disorders. It is interesting to note that people who take herbs to release stagnant liver qi often experience bouts of anger as the stagnation is relieved. The anger passes as the condition clears. Similarly, anger and irritability are often the determining factor in diagnosing liver qi stagnation. Many people are relieved to know their rage has a physiologic basis. It is essential to avoid drinking coffee when treating anger-related liver disorders, as coffee heats the liver and greatly intensifies the condition.

Joy

The emotion of joy is connected with the heart. A disorder related to joy may sound perplexing, since most people want as much joy in their life as possible. The disorders from this emotion are not caused by happiness; rather, the imbalance comes from too much excitement or stimulation, or sudden good news that comes as a shock to the system.
When evaluating stress levels, psychologists look at all sources of stress, both positive and negative. Clearly the death of a spouse or a job loss is a significant source of stress. However, a marriage or job promotion, while a happy occasion, is also a source of stress. A person who is constantly on the go, partying, and living a life of excess can eventually develop heart imbalances with palpitations, anxiety, andinsomnia. A person with heart imbalances may also exhibit emotional symptoms, since the heart is the seat of the spirit (shen). A person with extreme disturbances of heart shen might be seen chattering happily to himself with outbursts of laughter.
Such behavior results from the heart organ's inability to provide a stable resting place for the spirit. This type of imbalance is treated with acupuncture along the heart meridian. Herbal treatments consist of formulas that nourish heart blood or yin. If heart fire disturbs the spirit, herbs that clear heat from the heart are used.

Worry

A very common emotion in our stress-filled society, worry can deplete the energy of the spleen. This can cause digestive disturbances and eventually lead to chronic fatigue: A weakened spleen cannot efficiently turn food into qi, and the lungs are unable to extract qi from air efficiently. A person who worries too much "carries the weight of the world on her shoulders," a good description of how a person feels when her weak spleen qi leads to dampness. Treatment would include moxa and herbs that strengthen the spleen, allowing a person the energy to deal with life's problems instead of dwelling on them.

Pensiveness

Too much thinking or obsessing about a topic can also deplete the spleen, causing a stagnation of its qi. A person with this condition may exhibit such symptoms as poor appetite, forgetting to eat, and bloating after eating. In time, the person may develop a pale complexion from a deficiency of spleen qi. This can eventually affect the heart, causing the person to dream about the same subjects at night. Students are often affected by this imbalance; the standard treatment is use of herbs that tonify heart blood and spleen qi.

Sadness

Sadness or grief affects the lungs, producing fatigue, shortness of breath, crying, or depression. Treatment for this condition involves acupuncture to points along the lung and kidney meridians. Often, herbal formulas are used that tonify the qi or yin of the lungs.

Fear

The emotion of fear is related to the kidneys. This relationship can readily be seen when extreme fear causes a person to urinate uncontrollably. In children, this can also manifest as bed-wetting, which psychologists have linked to insecurity and anxiety. Long-term anxiety due to worrying about the future can deplete the kidneys of yin, yang, and qi, eventually leading to chronic weakness. Treatment involves tonifying the kidneys with yin or yang tonics, depending on the particular symptoms.

Shock

Shock is especially debilitating to the kidneys and heart. The "fight or flight" reaction causes an excessive release of adrenaline from the adrenal glands that sit on top of the kidneys. This causes the heart to respond with palpitations, anxiety, and insomnia. Chronic stress from shock can be very debilitating to the entire system, causing a wide range of problems. Severe shock can have a long-term effect on the heart shen, as is evident in victims of post-traumatic stress syndrome. Treatment involves psychotherapy, herbs that calm the spirit and nourish the heart and kidneys, and regular acupuncture treatments."

random things i know!

(one of the random things i know-- these 2 cute pups like to be bad together!!)

i had to get these out of my head,
but there was so many
i couldn't categorize them!
(sorry! even if i've repeated them)

  • your immune system tries to attack the 5 a's...antacids, antibiotics, alcohol, advil, animal foods
  • anything white and refined causes candida and suppresses the immune system
  • melatonin is an anti-cancer substance for the entire body
  • genes don't cause disease, but changes in the environment do.
  • remission only occurs in 7% of patients, no evidence that that success rate results from the treatments offered.
  • temporary tumor shrinkage through chemo has never shown to cure cancer or extend life.
  • have a cough-- use licorice herb (i've done this, it's so helpful, yummy, and non-"medicine"
  • prednisone, cortisone and other steroids used to treat dozens of conditions including asthma, lupus and cancer frequently cause weight gain, because they boost the appetite and force the body to retain certain fluids. they CAUSE just as many disorders as they are used for including cancer, heart disease, depression, hostility and aggression and eating disorders and...RISK OF HIV!
  • tumors could disappear when toxins are eliminated
